The National working committee of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, led by Alhaji Danzaki has explained to journalists the reasons why the national auditor chief sunny Nwakodo and the state chairman, Chief Sunday Akoma was suspended, according to Danzaki who addressed the press after the unions meeting held at the unions secretariat in Umuahia, he explained that the union received reports from members across the 36 states of the federation and inline with their constitution those affected was suspended to give room for investigation.
He stated that the union was reviewing its activities after the election and we have received reports of the unions activities during the elections across the 36 states, we started with Abia because of its position as the first state in alphabetical order and it will go round the 36 states and FCT, he explained that those who were suspended have not been found guilty of any offence yet.But we have received petitions bothering on issues that has to do with the election funds sent to the state chapters for the 2019 general elections inline with the MOU we had with INEC, we are here in Abia state and we will be here for the next one month, we will look at those petitions, treat them and those who are not guilty will be returned back to their positions, we only suspended them so as not to interfere with our investigations.
Also speaking to newsmen, a member of the union and the HOD Legal of the NURTW Abia chapter Mr. Peter Asagwara, said the members who were suspended have not been found guilty of any offence contrary to what was trending in the media, he explained that though chief Nwakodo was suspended on petitions relating to election funds, the truth of the matter is that, as a national officer of the union and the person handling transportation during the election, he used his discretion to allocate funds as against the approved cost, he emphasized that it does not amount to embezzlement as reported by the media, he insisted that the right word to use is misappropriation, because Chief Nwakodo, did not use the funds for any other purpose other than the purpose it was designed for, but that he applied personal discretion by cutting a little from the drivers who will be doing short distances to make up for those who will be going on long distance, stating that you cannot pay a driver travelling to Arochukwu same as a driver going Umuahia south from the state capital, so he applied his discretion and took part of what was allocated for those on short distance to augment for the ones doing long distances. I am sure that by the time the investigation will start and they will be given opportunities to explain themselves they will come out unblemished.
When asked if it is right to suspend members based on mere petitioning? he said every organization have their own rules and that’s the way ours is drafted, he cited example with that of the CJN who was suspended from office without being investigated or found culpable of the charges leveled against him.
All efforts meant to speak to Chief Sunny Nwakodo or the suspended Chairman Chief Sunday Akoma was not successful as they were barred from talking to the press until the determination of the accusations raised against them.
