Abia State Commissioner for Environment Dr. Aham Uko, has revealed plans by his ministry to collaborate with the Abia state environmental protection agency in refuse disposal and keeping the state clean.
The commissioner, while fielding questions from Newsmen said the “responsibility of keeping Aba and Umuahia clean and pollution free would no longer be left as the sole responsibility of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).
He said this after monitoring the monthly state-wide clean up exercise, Uko said though ASEPA is a parastatal under the Ministry of Environment, but the responsibility of keeping the cities clean would no longer be left to the agency in order to ensure regular evacuation of refuse and enhance the aesthetics of the cities.
Dr. Uko frowned at the defacing of some monument in the state with posters by politicians and other individuals, disclosed that his ministry had embarked on removal of posters and other solid waste that defaced the beauty of Umuahia and other cities in the state.
He further cautioned against posting of posters in unauthorized places in the state capital, warning that offenders would be prosecuted.
On the continued trading activities at Isigate and around the city center, the commissioner regretted that the traders did not engage in regular cleaning of their surrounding and particularly during the monthly state clean up exercise but only waited after the clean up to commence their trading activities.
