The Deputy chairman Umuahia North Local Government Area Mr. Eze Okwulehie has directed Security agencies to ensure that peddlers of hard drugs and other illicit alcoholic drinks do not regroup within the Isigate axis to continue their illegal trade.
Mr. Eze Okwulehie gave the directive while inspecting the level of compliance on traders and mini park operators whom he enforced their movement out of the major roads and other unauthorized places.
Mr Okwulehie said, it is sad that in our society people find it difficult to comply to Government directives without applying maximum force, he assured that the council may not apply maximum action but will be taking steps to stop street trading and loading of passengers around Isigate axis until they are relocated to a permanent site in the Ubani modern market.
He directed the security agencies to embark on a 24 hours surveillance to stop the traders and commercial vehicle operators from blocking the roads or ply their trades in the evenings and weekends, stating that the current move was not aimed at depriving them of their means of livelihood but to checkmate crime and criminality and to also ensure free flow of traffic and enhance the aesthetic value of the capital city.
The Deputy T.C Chairman also notified the security agencies not to use the opportunity to extort money from the poor traders and warned that any security agent caught extorting money from the traders will be severely dealt with.
